For the case of Brazil Type Approval, certification process is handled by National Telecommunications Agency of Brazil. In Portuguese, it’s called “Agência Nacional de Telecomunicações” or commonly shortened as “ANATEL”. That’s why the certificate is also called “ANATEL Certificate”, simply because it is issued by ANATEL.

For your information, ANATEL is an independent agency, both Administratively and Financially, in Brazil. This agency was established in 1997 through the issuance of Law 9472, 16/07/1997 and Decree 2338 of 07/10/1997. Hierarchically, ANATEL is not under another government institution, so it’s not a subordinate institution. To do its functions, ANATEL has the power to grant, to regulate, and to supervise telecommunications sectors in Brazil. It also has access to the material assets and expertise required to secure their telecommunication sectors.

Related to product certification, ANATEL is the responsible authority to perform this task. All telecommunications products that are intended to be marketed or used in Brazil must comply with the local regulation by obtaining certification from ANATEL. Before issuing the certificate, ANATEL will ensure the compliance of the product and conduct series of testing to ensure all technical parameters are fulfilled.

The common procedures applied by Anatel in issuing Brazil Type Approval certificate are started by document submission. Some technical documents such as specification sheet, product photos, user manual, and others are submitted for evaluation. Then, after product classification is identified in the evaluation process, it will be continued to product testing. Test are tailored to ensure that all technical parameters are fulfilled.

Product testing is conducted in ANATEL-accredited test lab in Brazil. Some test that needs to do such as radio frequency, electromagnetic compatibility, safety, etc. Test required depends on the type of the product. After the tests are completed, test report will be issued. Along with other documents, reports will be submitted for evaluation. Once evaluation is finished and the product is declared as “complied”, then ANATEL certificate or Brazil Type Approval certificate is issued. And the product is granted the rights to use ANATEL label.
