Type of Light Bulbs and How to Choose It

To put it simply, light bulbs are divided by four popular types, which are incandescent, compact fluorescent (CFL), halogen and light emitting diode (LED).

Each different types are with its pros and cons and you might choose one over the other for each different rooms.

1. Light-Emitting Diode (LED)

The first one is the most energy-efficient light bulb. Although the LED light has only been popular in recent decades, it’s already been around since 1927 when Russian inventor Oleg Lesev reports the creation of the first LED.

The characteristics of LED is it gives off no heat, contains no mercury and emits a bright light.

They are excellent for task lighting since they emit directed light. Integrated LED light fixtures are those that have LED lights built right into the fixture.

Also, they’re well-known for their lifespan and tend to have a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours.

2. Incandescent

The next one is the incandescent light bulb. This type of light bulb was invented by Warren de la Rue in 1820.

Rue uses a platinum filament that’s inserted inside a partially vacuumed glass tube and channeled electric current through it, and then the metal radiated light due to the intense heat it produced.

The incandescent lights are the most widely used and usually the least expensive type of light bulb even though this type of light bulb tends to use more energy than other types of light bulbs.

The incandescent light bulb emits a warm light that can be used with a dimmer. The incandescent light bulb usually lasts up to a year which is longer than halogen light bulbs but not as long as CFL or LED light bulbs.

3. Compact Fluorescent (CFL)

The CFL light bulbs are among the most energy-efficient light bulbs around although they often take some time to warm up and get brighter.

This also being the most versatile light bulbs as it can emit a wide range of colors depending on the model that you choose.

You can use these to illuminate large spaces such as kitchens, basements or great rooms.

One of the benefits of using the CFL light bulbs is they can last longer than traditional light bulbs and have a slightly cheaper price than the LEDs.

But remember, the CFL contains mercury, so you want to handle them carefully. And also after they burn out, they are recyclable, so a big win for the environment!

4. Halogen

The last one of our list of types of light bulbs is the halogen lights. These lights emit a white light that simulates high-noon daylight.

These energy-saving lights can be dimmed and are perfect for recessed lighting, pendants, and under cabinets. However, they burn out the fastest among the four options.

Because they heat up quickly, keep them away from flammable materials. To be extra safe, wear gloves when changing them – the oil from your hands can cause the bulb to break if it gets too hot.

So there you are! The 4 types of light bulbs to choose to illuminate your home!

Every light bulb might have its own characteristics and are better to use in one condition among the others.

But, the only thing that matters is you choose the light bulbs with the SNI logo on it!

What does that mean? The SNI logo on light bulbs means that the light bulbs have already been certified with the SNI certification.

The SNI certification itself is a set of regulations that ensure any products or services that are being sold or distributed in Indonesia, this includes the light bulbs that are used to illuminate your rooms!

The lights that are certified with the SNI certification have already undergone a series of tests to determine its safety and quality.
