History of Microwave
The invention of this microwave is quite different from the inventions of technological innovations in general.
Usually, the inventor of an innovation is a scientist or an expert with an adequate educational background.
But apparently, the first inventor of the microwave was someone who didn’t even finish grammar school by the name of Percy Lebaron Spencer.
Percy Lebaron Spencer is a self-taught engineer that during World War II, was working on a project to develop radar technology using magnetrons, microwave-generating vacuum tubes.
One day, he had a chocolate bar in his pocket for a lunch snack and just after he did an experiment with the power level of a magnetron tube.
He intended to take the chocolate from the bag and when Percy reached for the chocolate, he was surprised to find that it had melted.
That’s when Percy discovered that magnetrons could be used to heat food and he began to develop the food heating device and found that microwaves can cook food faster than ovens.
Percy then finally obtained a patent for the invention of the world’s first microwave in 1945.
In 1947, Percy’s microwave, then called the Radarange, went on sale. At that time, the size of the microwave was still the size of a refrigerator with a high price.
It was only in 1967 that microwaves were already much more efficient in size as we usually see them everyday placed on a shelf or kitchen table. The price is also much cheaper and affordable.

What Was the Microwave Initially Made For?
The magnetron tube is the heart of microwave oven technology and was first developed in the 1940s at the University of Birmingham in England.
Initially, this tube was used to emit radar signals capable of detecting enemy aircraft and ships during World War II.
However, in 1945, American engineer Percy Spencer accidentally discovered its ability to rapidly heat food.
While working on radar technology, he noticed that a candy bar in his pocket had melted, prompting him to experiment with the magnetron’s capabilities in cooking.
This serendipitous discovery led to the development of the first microwave ovens, revolutionizing cooking methods and making meal preparation faster and more convenient.
