Advantages of Tungsten

What are the advantages of tungsten over other metals? As one of the hardest metal in the world, tungsten can provide us with higher durability.

But there are a lot of advantages of tungsten over other metals, what are those? Let’s find out on today’s article, only at dimulti!

Advantages of Tungsten

Advantages of Tungsten in a Variety of Industries

1. Hardness and Durability

One of the main advantages of tungsten is its extraordinary toughness. Tungsten is one of the hardest metals ever found, even stronger than steel.

This property makes tungsten resistant to scratches, wearing off, and deformation.

Due to its toughness, tungsten is ideal for applications that require components that are very durable and can withstand extreme working conditions, such as cutting tools, welding electrodes, and precision optical components.

The strength of tungsten makes it possible to achieve optimal performance without sacrificing lifespan.

2.  High Melting Point

Tungsten has a very high melting point, which is approximately around 3.422 degrees Celsius.

This extreme melting point means tungsten can maintain its integrity and remain stable at temperatures far beyond the temperature limit at which many other metals will begin to melt or change shape.

This property makes tungsten ideal to  be used in industries involving extreme temperatures, such as space, construction and also automotive industries.

3. Dimensional Stability

Tungsten has excellent dimensional stability, which means that the metal does not undergo significant size or shape changes despite being exposed to extreme temperatures, pressure, or deformation.

This dimensional stability makes tungsten very useful in applications that require high precision and precision, such as in the woodworking and manufacturing industries.

So, this ability ensures that components made of tungsten remain accurate and consistent, even under heavy operating conditions.

4. Corrosion Resistant

Another advantage of tungsten is its ability to withstand corrosion from environmental or chemical conditions.

And because of that, many industries use tungsten as its main material in a variety of their products or systems.

Such as pipework systems in oil or gas industries, valves, and other machinery that operates under aggressive environmental conditions.

And with that being said, its ability to withstand corrosion and chemicals ensures that every component that is made of this metal is able to have a longer lifespan, thus cutting the repair and maintenance cost.

5. Lower Thermal Expansion and Contraction

The last one of our list of advantages of tungsten is lower thermal expansion or contraction.

The thermal expansion is the tendency of matter, in this case metal, to increase in length, area, or volume, thus changing its size and density in response to an increase in temperature.

While the thermal contraction is the ability of metal to decrease in overall size while exposed to a decrease in temperature.

All metals undergo thermal expansion and contraction, but tungsten has a very low thermal expansion coefficient, so its size is virtually unchanged despite being exposed to extreme temperature changes.

This property is crucial in applications that require dimensional stability, such as precision tools and high-temperature equipment.

Tungsten ensures that the components remain accurate and function well, even under variable temperature conditions, reducing the need for adjustment and maintenance.
