What is a Fire Hose?

Fire hose is a device that works to flow water from the water source when a fire occurs.
The water source itself usually comes from the fire truck or a pillar hydrant mounted on the inside or outside of the building.
The fire extinguisher can be pulled and extended over long distances so it’s so useful to help the firefighters in putting out the fire.
There are several functions of the fire hose that you might want to know, such as:
- Flows water from the water source to the fire site so that the fire can be extinguished faster.
- It’s an area that’s hard to reach with a fire truck because not all locations are at a strategic point.
- Helps extinguish the fire quickly and effectively.

Types of Fire Hoses by Its Materials

The fire hose itself is divided into several different types which are classified according to the materials used in the fire hose.
Each material has different characteristics, so the suitability of use and result is not the same.
There are four types of fire hoses usually on the market. Let’s find out down below!
1. Polyester Fire Hose
The first one is the polyester fire hose that have the following advantages:
- Lightweight: The polyester fire hose typically has less weight than other types of fire hoses, making it easier for the firefighter to carry and use the hose.
- Strength: Polyester is well-known for its strength and durability, so the fire hose made from polyester is having an improved lifespan.
- Resistant to abrasion: Polyester is already proven to be resistant to abrasion and also from the chemical.
- Temperature resistance: Its resistance to extreme temperatures allows it to be used in a variety of weather conditions.
2. Rubber Hose
A rubber fire hose is a type of fire extinguishing hose that’s made from rubber material. Based on field statistics, a rubber hose becomes the most commonly used type of hose because it is available in a variety of sizes and lengths.
The rubber fire hose also have a certain advantages, such as:
- Durability: Because of its resistance to abrasion characteristic, the rubber fire hose has the advantage of being durable and can last a long time.
- Pressure resistant: The fire hose made from rubber can withstand the pressure from the pillar hydrant, making it a reliable tool for the firefighters.
- Resistant to chemicals: The rubber fire hose is durable and does not show a reaction to chemicals that can affect or even disrupt the extinguishing process.
- Elasticity: Its elasticity and flexibility are high so it’s easy to operate and maintain.
3. Semi-Rigid Fire Hose
The last type of fire extinguisher hose is a semi-rigid fire hose. This material is a combination of rubber material with PVC.
The combinations of these two materials are not without reason, based on their respective characteristics, the combination results in some of the following advantages:
- Lightweight: Because of the combination of PVC and rubber the semi-rigid fire hose has a lighter weight and still maintains its flexibility.
- Pressure resistant: The semi-rigid hose also has more pressure resistance than the PVC hose.
- Storage: The semi-rigid hose is easier to roll thus making it easier to store.
- Chemical resistant: It’s also more resistant to abrasion and chemicals.
