Will coffee stunt growth? It is a well known myth that a cup of coffee can stunt you or your children’s growth.

But to clarify the confusion, the short answer to that is that coffee does not stunt you or anyone’s growth. 

It is because the general misconception about the caffeine contained in coffee will cause osteoporosis thus making you shorter.

Instead, a person’s height depends on their genetics and the nutrients they consume during their growing years to reach their maximum height potential.

Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant that can activate brain function and temporarily boost energy. You can find it in coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, and even chocolate. 

Mental alertness and increased energy are other benefits of caffeine consumption. Caffeine can have a significant mood-boosting effect. is a mood lifter for many people. 

Coffee in particular is associated with the prevention of stroke and certain cancers, as well as a reduced risk of depression.

Despite its multiple benefits, coffee, much like other foods and beverages, is not recommended to be consumed in excess as an excessive coffee consumption can make people jittery and when consumed at certain times can disrupt your sleep.

In addition, its addiction can cause the body to become somewhat dependent, although “caffeine addiction” is not actually a health threat. 

You will find that you crave coffee so much that cutting back will make you experience some symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, or getting irritated more easily.

How Coffee Really Affects Kids

Although there are no official guidelines about children (or teenagers) and caffeine, the American Academy of Pediatrics says that no amount of caffeine is proven safe for kids.

And although it is not growth-related problems, caffeine contains in coffee can cause several problems, such as:

  • Anxiety.
  • Disrupted sleep.
  • Abnormal heart rhythm.
  • Moodiness.
  • Restlessness or jumpiness.
  • Headaches.
  • Seizures.
  • Upset stomach.
  • High blood pressure.

And aside from that, the caffeine contained in other caffeinated drinks such as soda and energy drinks also can cause several problems.

As those drinks are loaded with tons of sugar, the excessive consumption of the said drinks is directly tied to an increase in body weight and obesity.

So, it’s clear that coffee has no effect on adolescent growth. Environment and genetics are the influential factors. Apart from genetics and nutrition, gender also affects adolescent growth. 

Boys and girls grow in different ways, especially around puberty. Boys tend to be taller and physically stronger than girls. 

However, girls tend to mature faster during adolescence, while boys mature over a longer period of time. 

Other than those, here are several factors that determine your kids’ growth:

  • Genetics
  • Getting enough calories
  • Nutritious foods
  • Enough vitamins or micronutrients (such as vitamin D, C and calcium)
  • Growth disorders
  • A loving environment

So, will coffee stunt growth? No, it will not. But be considerate about giving your kids caffeinated drinks whether it is a coffee or soda/energy drinks.

Maybe giving your child a coffee once in a while in a considerate amount is not too bad, as coffee has several health benefits. But be sure to choose the quality coffee.

In Indonesia, there are several standards that regulate coffee. It is to ensure that the coffee that is sold and distributed in Indonesia meets Indonesian standards.

The standard about coffee is stated in the SNI which stands for Standar Nasional Indonesia (Indonesian National Standard).

The said standard aims to regulate, and give the standard for many if not all of the products and/or services that are sold, distributed and provided in Indonesia.

The SNI standard for coffee is stated in:

  • SNI 2983:2024: For instant coffee
  • SNI 3542:2004: For powdered coffee
  • SNI 01-2907-2008: For coffee beans
