8 Benefits of Coffee Grounds for Plants

1. Growing Vegetables with Coffee Grounds

Using coffee grounds in the vegetable garden ensures a slow supply of nitrogen and lowers the pH. Thus, it contributes to healthy and strong plant growth.

Plant the coffee grounds to a depth of 6-8 inches in the soil to eliminate garden parasites, fungi, and pathogenic worms.

Green vegetables and root crops respond well to this measure, especially when you mix the coffee grounds with the soil at the time of planting.

2. Add to Mulch

Coffee grounds mulch has become popular due to claims that it deters pests, prevents weeds, and aerates the soil.

Since coffee grounds have a fine texture, their use as mulch works best only in combination with coarse organic mulches.

3. Prevents Fungi

Coffee’s anti-fungal and acidic properties make it an ideal supplement to ward off pathogenic fungi and prevent the onset of debilitating plant diseases such as coffee rust.

As they decompose, coffee grounds carry their own complement of mold and fungal colonies that defeat external fungi from colonizing and causing disease.

The natural molds and fungi in coffee grounds can suppress pathogenic fungi, including fusarium, Pythium, and Sclerotinia species.

4. Use in Fertilizer

Although coffee grounds are much too acidic to add directly to soil as a fertilizer, coffee grounds contain potassium, magnesium, and are super high in nitrogen.

Try mixing coffee grounds with lime and any organic matter in a compost pile to get those nutrient while cutting a little bit of coffee’s natural acidity.

This mixture works best for acid-loving plants, such as azaleas, rhododendrons and blueberries.

5. Feed the Worms

We all know that a healthy worm population means a healthy crop. Worms love to consume coffee grounds and experts recommend adding them to compost piles to attract worms.

6. Grows Mushroom

Growing mushrooms with coffee grounds is easy. All you need is cardboard, and some used coffee grounds as the medium.

The corrugated cardboard acts as the perfect barrier to keep out competing fungi and bacteria while providing enough air for the mushroom roots to thrive.

Coffee provides all the minerals needed to aid the growth of the mushrooms.

7. Great for Carrots

Mixing carrot seeds with fresh coffee grounds makes the small seeds easier to sow. As a bonus, the strong coffee aroma can act as a natural pesticide to repel insects during the early stages of growth.

8. Shift Soil’s PH

We mentioned earlier about the coffee ground’s acidity, right? Well, due to that, used or fresh coffee ground can also be used to alter your soil’s pH level.

The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, with the higher the number, the more alkaline the soil will become, while the lower the numbers, the more acidic.

While many plants such as grass and most landscape plants tend to do well in soil with a pH around 6,5, plants such as peppers and potatoes are better in more acidic soil.

With that being said, coffee grounds can be used to lower the pH of your soil by simply sprinkling it on top of the soil.

So there you have it! The 8 benefits of coffee grounds for plants that we’ve summarized just for you!
