Types of Urea Fertilizers – Urea are a type of fertilizer that provide nitrogen to further increase the plant’s life.

The nitrogen itself is a crucial nutrient for healthy plant growth and helps plants with green leafy growth, photosynthesis and overall development.

There are a lot of benefits that you can get with the use of urea fertilizers, as the urea fertilizers are an efficient, cheap and easy to transport fertilizer.

As for as the chemical compositions, there aren’t different types of urea fertilizers as the urea  itself is a specific chemical compound (CO(NH2)2). However, urea fertilizers can come in two main physical forms that affect their application:

1. Prilled Urea

Prilled urea is the most common form of urea fertilizers and shaped like solidified droplets with 1 to 2,4mm in diameter.

The prilled urea is also the cheapest option of urea fertilizers and has the ability to dissolve quickly in the water.

Also, compared to granular urea, they tend to have a bigger surface area, which improves the way water interacts with them and speeds up the dissolution process.

These days, the prilled urea is frequently used due to its ability to resist breaking down when combined with other fertilizers ingredients, such as potassium chloride.

Other than that, the urea prill also has a high resistance, thus making it lasts longer so you don’t have to use fertilizers as frequently.

The only downside of using prilled urea is this fertilizers tend to break down quickly especially when it rains.

The prilled urea usually used for:

  • Direct use to soil or through irrigation systems
  • In NOx control system for nitrogen oxide control in diesel engines
  • Melting snow on runways
  • Cattle feed
  • Pharmacology

2. Granular Urea Fertilizer

The next one is the granular urea fertilizers. Unlike its counterpart the prilled urea, granular urea consist of larger and more uneven granules with the size ranging from 2 to 4mm in diameter.

With those characteristics, the granular also tends to be stronger than the prilled urea and less likely to break.

The granular urea fertilizer can be added straight to the soil or combined with other fertilizers, such as potash and phosphate, to provide a full plant food mixture and can be easily applied with standard spreading tools.

The granular urea fertilizer usually used for:

  • Raw material for other fertilizers production
  • Reducing air pollution from diesel engines
  • Manufacture of melamine
  • Manufacture of resins

The two of those have their own pros and cons, you can use them according to your needs.

But, the one thing you should consider is the quality and safety aspects of the urea fertilizers.

Choose the fertilizer with the SNI logo on it as it indicates that the urea that you use has already been with the SNI certification.

The SNI certification is a set of regulations to set safety and quality standards of any products and services being sold and distributed in Indonesia.

This includes the urea fertilizers, in fact, the urea fertilizer is one among the mandatory products that needs to be certified before entering the Indonesian market.
