1. Types of Fire Sprinklers

The SNI for fire sprinkler regulates the use of several types of sprinkler systems that are tailored to the needs and risks of fire in buildings.

Generally, there are four types of fire sprinklers used in Indonesia, including:

  • Wet Sprinkler System
  • Dry Sprinkler System
  • Pre-Action Sprinkler System
  • Deluge System

2. Installation Design

The design of a sprinkler system must meet several important criteria to ensure effective coverage.

According to fire sprinkler installation standards, the design and installation of a fire sprinkler system must comply with the following criteria:

  • Water Demand and Pressure: Calculate the water demand based on the size and fire risk of the protected area. Water pressure must be sufficient to reach all protected areas.
  • Sprinkler Head Distribution: Sprinkler head placement must be carefully planned to ensure even water distribution. The spacing between sprinkler heads should be in accordance with established fire sprinkler installation standards.
  • Zoning and Control: Large buildings should be divided into zones with separate controls for easy management and maintenance.

3. System’s Components

  • Pipes: Must be corrosion resistant and able to withstand high water pressure. Pipe materials are usually steel or copper.
  • Sprinkler Head: According to fire sprinkler installation standards, sprinkler heads are current according to the type and risk of fire in the protected area. Choose sprinkler heads with the appropriate temperature rating.
  • Pump: According to fire sprinkler installation standards, the extinguishing pump must be able to provide the required water pressure and flow for the entire system.
  • Control Panel: Should be easy to operate and allow effective monitoring and control of the entire system.

4. Procedures

Conduct a site survey and plan the installation by considering all possible risk factors.

Install the pipes with proper methods to ensure that there are no leaks and smooth water flow in the system.

Ensure that sprinkler heads are properly installed and in the right position for maximum coverage.

After installation, conduct pressure and water flow tests to ensure all components are functioning properly.

  • Periodic Inspection: Perform visual and functional fire sprinkler inspections periodically to detect and correct problems before they become major.
  • Routine Maintenance: Routinely clean and inspect system components to avoid dirt buildup or corrosion that can impede water flow.
  • Recordkeeping and Documentation: Fire sprinkler installation standards also require you to record all maintenance and inspection activities in a written report for reference and regulatory compliance.

What is the Fire Sprinkler Installation Spacing Distance?

Effective fire sprinkler installation relies heavily on the accurate placement of each type of sprinkler head. 

The fire sprinkler installation standard, the SNI 03-3989-2000, provides specific guidelines on sprinkler installation spacing to ensure system effectiveness.

The distance of the furthest sprinkler head to the wall is ¼ of the planned distance between sprinkler heads in a row. 

The distance of the two furthest sprinkler heads in the row is ¾ of the planned distance between sprinkler heads in a row.

According to SNI 03-3989-2000, the minimum distance between two sprinkler heads should not be less than 2 m, unless a barrier is placed between the sprinkler heads. 

This barrier consists of a metal plate measuring 200 mm wide and 150 mm high.

The sprinkler SNI also provides guidelines that the location of sprinkler heads to the wall in the case of light fire hazard systems should not exceed 2.3m.

For moderate or severe fire hazard systems, the distance between the sprinkler head and the wall should not exceed 2 m.

The fire sprinkler installation standard also states that if the building is not equipped with a ceiling, the distance between the sprinkler head and the wall should not exceed 1.5m. 

In buildings with open sides, the distance from the sprinkler head to the open side should not exceed 1.5 m.
