How to Install Fire Hydrants According to the SNI Standards

How to install fire hydrants according to SNI standards? Fire hydrant installation in Indonesia must always follow SNI and additionally NFPA standards.

The goal is that the fire hydrant installation can be maximized and that the fire hydrant can work optimally in providing building protection against fire hazards.

Conversely, hydrant installations that do not follow SNI and NFPA regulations can certainly not function optimally as they should.

Therefore, it is very important to know how to install a building hydrant in accordance with SNI and NFPA rules.

Fire Hydrant Installation Standard

How to Install Fire Hydrants According to the SNI Standards

How to install a fire hydrant is clearly stated in both national and international regulations, namely the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Regulations on how to install fire hydrants according to SNI and NFPA standards include the following:

  • SNI 03-1735-2000: procedures for planning building access and environmental access to prevent fire hazards in buildings
  • SNI 03-1745-2000: procedures for planning and installing hydrant standpipe and slang systems for the prevention of fire hazards in buildings
  • SNI 03-3989-2000: procedures for planning and installation of automatic sprinkler systems for the prevention of fire hazards in buildings
  • NFPA 14: standard for installation of slang and standpipe systems
  • NFPA 20: centrifugal fire pump installation standard

Fire suppression systems that are installed without following these standards can lead to system failure.

This causes the fire extinguishing system to not function optimally in the event of an emergency.

1. Installation Distance

The ideal hydrant installation distance is set between 35 to 38 meters, based on calculations that take into account the length of the fire hose which generally reaches 30 meters, coupled with the range of the water jet from the hose nozzle which can reach around 5 meters.

This spacing is designed to ensure that hydrants can be accessed easily and efficiently in emergency situations, allowing firefighters to reach areas that may be threatened by fire without experiencing any difficulty.

This proper spacing also helps to minimize response time when dealing with fires, thereby increasing effectiveness and safety in suppression efforts.

2. Location

The installation location of a fire hydrant must carefully consider the surrounding environment or area, given that fire hydrants are very important in emergency situations.

Therefore, the location of the hydrant installation must be chosen wisely, ensuring that the hydrant is easily accessible and clearly visible, without being obstructed by other objects such as plants, buildings, or vehicles.

This strategic placement not only makes it easier for firefighters to access the hydrant quickly, but also ensures that the hydrant can function optimally when needed, thus increasing safety and responsiveness in dealing with fires.

3. Access

Referring to SNI 03-1735-2000, the installation of hydrants must be designed in such a way as to make it easier for officers and fire trucks to access the 50-meter road to the hydrant location without experiencing obstacles.

Therefore, hydrants are usually installed in strategic open areas, close to emergency exits, so that they can be accessed quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.

4. 8 Stories or More Buildings Must Have a Fire Hydrants

Based on SNI and NFPA, high-rise buildings that have 8 floors or more must use fire hydrants. The goal is to prevent fire from spreading to other buildings or buildings nearby.
