The Dawn of Biscuits

Historical records reveal that biscuits were first created by the ancient Romans. They made dough from wheat flour that was boiled until it thickened. 

After that, the dough was placed on a plate, flattened, and allowed to dry and harden before being cut into pieces.

Before they were ready to eat, the pieces were usually smeared or coated with honey to make them taste sweeter.

Over time, the way biscuits are made has evolved. In more modern times, biscuits are baked twice to achieve a harder, more durable texture.

This technique also made the biscuits more durable, and the biscuits were named “panis biscotus,” which means “twice baked” in Latin.

In the 18th century, the biscuit baking process was further tightened by baking them up to four times. 

The result was a biscuit with a very hard texture that was difficult to bite right off, so it had to be dipped in water, milk, tea or syrup.

Because of their long-lasting nature, these biscuits were a favorite provision for sailors and soldiers serving away from home. That’s why they are often called “sailor biscuits.”

Well, in the 17th century, biscuits became a very popular snack as a dessert. Back then, biscuits were often dipped into a cup of sweet wine. 

This tradition added a new dimension to the biscuit eating experience, with the deliciousness of the biscuits paired with the sweetness of the wine.

In the 19th century, in 1846, the biscuit industry experienced a major breakthrough with the establishment of the first biscuit factory called Huntley & Palmers. 

This factory started its history with a relatively small production, but in less than three decades, Huntley & Palmers managed to produce tens of thousands of tons of biscuits every year. 

Their success made them one of the largest and leading biscuit manufacturers in the world, spearheading the development of the global biscuit industry.

When World War II hit, biscuits found a new role as a highly prized food. At that time, biscuits were rationed as part of government rations and often enjoyed with a cup of sweet tea. 

Tea at that time was generally not very sweet due to the lack of sugar. To add sweetness and compensate for the lack of sugar, people started dipping biscuits into the tea. 

This became a popular way to enrich the flavor of the biscuits and tea, providing a much-needed touch of sweetness.

With the development of food technology, the way biscuits are made has undergone significant changes. 

Today, the biscuit-making process has been updated so that it only requires baking once to achieve an extremely crispy and delicious texture. 

These advancements have also allowed manufacturers to create innovative biscuit flavors, from classics like chocolate and vanilla to exotic flavors like matcha and salted caramel. 

Thanks to these innovations, biscuits are now available in a variety of shapes and flavors, catering to the tastes of fans around the world and continuing to be a favorite snack for any occasion.
