When processing type approval certification in certain country, one thing that must be prepared from the first time is sample. Sample is required especially in the countries that obligate local testing. Well, not all countries obligate that, but in some countries, local test is required to check the compliance of the product toward applied standards. One example of countries that obligates local test is India. Therefore, when we’re processing Indian type approval, sample must be one of the focuses in the preparation stage.

In India, sample requirements depend on the type of certification processed. For your information, there are four key certifications in India, namely:

  1. WPC ETA (Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing, Equipment Type Approval (ETA))
  2. BIS CRS (Bureau of Indian Standards, Compulsory Registration Scheme)
  3. TEC MTCTE (Telecommunication Engineering Centre and Mandatory Testing and Certification of Telecom Equipment)
  4. BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency)

Each certification above requires different type and quantity of the sample. But, because ICT product typically only needs 2 types of certifications, which are WPC ETA and TEC MTCTE, we will focus only to those two certifications.

For WPC ETA certification, the certification process is though paperwork method. Therefore, no sample is required. Whereas TEC certification, the process is through local test in Indian Lab. To do this test, some samples are required. The quantity depends on the feature of the device and the type of testing required. Some tests may require conducted sample, some others may require normal or radiated sample. Regarding this sample type, this should be discussed with the respective test lab. Commonly, to process TEC certificate, the required samples are from 3-5 units.

Why We Care

One of the trickiest parts of approval process is testing. Testing can be tricky because some countries have their own test parameter and standard. This standard can be different from common international standards such as CE and FCC. Therefore, doing test in respective countries may require special sample treatment. Sample must be prepared according to each county’s standards. Preparing the correct sample can avoid sending sample multiple times. And it can significantly cut the budget. Therefore, understanding sample requirements is important when processing India type approval certification.
