Types of Drills

1. Standard Drills

The first one is the standard drills that are also the most versatile and commonly used by DIYers and professionals alike.

They can be used for everything from making holes in walls to driving screws into woods, hence “hence the most versatile” tools title given to this type of drill.

It consist of a motor that turns the drill bit that is held in place by a chuck. You can also adjust the speed of the drill by changing the position of a switch.

On top of that, most of these drills are also equipped with a reverse function that can be used for removing screws.

2. Impact Drills

The impact drill is a very powerful tool and is often used in construction projects that require the construction of holes on hard materials such as concrete or stone.

Instead of drilling motion, the impact drills works in a hammering action to create holes, thus making it possible to drill through tougher materials.

But, their high torque and power makes the impact drills more difficult to control. In an impact drill the force is delivered perpendicular to the bit, rather than from the bit itself.

With that being said, the impact drills are most commonly used by experienced professionals and in larger projects such as constructions.

3. Hammer Drill

The next one of our list of types of drills is the hammer drill. As its name implies the hammer drill works by using a rotating drill bit to create a hole while delivering quick and forceful blows to the material at the same time.

The drilling and hammering actions that are used in this type of drill makes it possible for the hammer drill to be effectively creating holes in even the hardest materials such as masonry, stone, etc.

Also, like most of the drills, the hammer drill can be also adjusted to better suit the material being drilled.

On top of that the variety of drill bits can be used for different applications also.

4. Drill Press

Different from the previous drills that we’ve discussed before, the drill press is a worktop machine, meaning it’s not portable like the other drills.

The drill press is designed to have more precision and controls as they are drilling, and consist of a base, column or pillar and a head as well as a table attached to the column.

You can also adjust the depth, speed and alignment of the hole you are drilling with the drill press.

These types of drills are usually used in more professional settings, such as wood working, metalworking and others where precise holes are needed.

5. Core Drill

Last but not least on our list of types of drills are the core drills. The core drill is used to create a hole in the center of an object.

The most common type of core drill is the diamond core drill that uses a diamond-shaped tipped bit to cut through hard materials.

This type of drills are commonly used in plumbing or electrical wiring to create holes or to remove samples of material for testing.

Another function of this type of drills is to create a decorative pattern in stone or concrete, making it versatile in other applications.
