How to Roll Fire Hose Properly

1. Prevent Damage

Hydrant hoses are made of strong materials, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be damaged.

Moreover, if you roll it up carelessly, the hose can be bent or even torn, which can reduce its lifespan.

2. Keeping the Hose Clean

Rolling up your fire hydrant hose neatly is essential to make cleaning and maintenance easier.

By rolling it up properly, the risk of trapping dirt and dust in the folds of the hose is minimized, keeping the hose clean and ready to use when needed.

On the other hand, if the hose is rolled up carelessly, dirt and dust can accumulate, which not only reduces the efficiency of the hose, but can also pose a risk during emergency situations.

3. Makes it Easy to Use in Emergencies

Imagine there’s a fire and firefighters struggling to unroll a tangled and messy hose; this situation can slow down their response to the fire. To avoid this, it is very important to roll up hydrant hoses the right way.

With proper rolling, the hose will always be ready for use at any time, allowing officers to quickly carry out their duties without a hitch.

4. Save Spaces

Rolling up your fire hose properly not only saves space in your storage area, but it’s also very important when you have a lot of other equipment.

With an organized storage space, you can easily find and retrieve the equipment you need during a fire emergency.

This helps speed up the response process, allowing firefighters to focus on their duties without being hampered by clutter in the storage area.

5. Prevents Accident

Finally, a fire hydrant hose that you roll up carelessly can be a hazard in the storage room. The reason is, there could be parts of the hose that dangle and make people trip and cause injury.

Did you know there are various methods of rolling firehose? Yup, there are! But in this article we will cover the two easiest and most common ones! Let’s get going!

1. Single Roll

First, let’s discuss the single roll, the most common hydrant hose rolling technique. Here are the steps to roll up a fire hydrant hose single roll!

  1. Connect one end of the hose to the hydrant or water source. Make sure the connection is strong and there are no leaks.
  2. After use, make sure the hose is empty of water. Lift the hose from the opposite end to the hydrant and let the water drain out.
  3. Roll up the hydrant hose from the end connected to the hydrant. Hold the end of the hose in your hand and roll it neatly inward, forming a circle.
  4. Make sure each winding of the hose is taut and not loose. Loose rolls can cause damage to the hose.
  5. When you have finished rolling, tie the hose with a string or use a hose clamp to keep the roll from unraveling.

2. Double Roll

Double rolls are a little tricky, but they are very effective for neater storage and to avoid damage from creases. So, here are the steps!

  1. Just like the single reel, connect the hose end to the hydrant or water source first.
  2. Make sure the hose is empty of water in the same way, i.e. lift it from the opposite end and let the water drain out.
  3. Fold the hose into two equal lengths, with the ends meeting in the middle.
  4. Start by rolling up the hydrant hose from the folded section. Grasp the fold of the hose and roll it up neatly, forming a double loop.
  5. Ensure that each twist of the hose remains taut and there are no sharp creases that could damage the hose structure.
  6. Tie the reel with a rope or hose clamp, as with a single reel, to keep it neat and unraveled.

So there you have it! A guide on how to roll a fire hose properly!

Did you know that a fire hose also needs to be certified by the SNI certification before it’s being used?

Because of its crucial role in fire fighting equipment, fire hoses need to meet a certain standard that is applied in Indonesia to ensure its capability in extinguishing a fire.

That’s why the standard has been set and every fire hose that is used in either a building or fire truck needs to meet this standard.

The standard itself is clearly stated in SNI UL 19:2018.
