How to Choose an Air Purifier

Picking the perfect air purifier for your home can be tricky! There’s a lot to think about, from the type of filter it uses to how much it costs to run.

This guide will help you sort through the most important factors, like filter type, size of the room, and ease of maintenance.

We’ll prioritize the features that matter most so you can breathe easy knowing you’ve chosen the right air purifier for your needs.

1. Types of Filtration

While many air purifiers boast complex filtration systems, all you really need is a True HEPA filter.

The HEPA, which stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter, captures a whopping 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns – that’s the key stuff!

Avoid air purifiers with UV or ionization features as these can actually create ozone, a lung irritant that’s bad for your health.

And another thing worth considering is the multiple filtration process.

Typically, there’s a washable pre-filter to catch larger particles, followed by the essential True HEPA filter.

This is a two-stage system. Some models even have a third stage – an activated carbon filter – that tackles odors and gasses.

2. Size of the Room

Before you buy an air purifier, measure the room where you’ll use it.  Air purifiers are designed for specific room sizes.

Their cleaning power is based on how often they can completely refresh the air in a room, measured in Air Changes per Hour (ACH). The higher the ACH, the more powerful the purifier.

For example, an ACH of 4 means the purifier can swap out all the air in the room four times in an hour. That translates to cleaning the air in just 15 minutes!

3. Cost

The next thing you’ll have to consider before buying an air purifier is the cost, this includes the maintenance cost.

Air purifier filters need replacing, but how often depends! Some filters last 3 months, while others go 6 or even 12.

The key is to factor in filter replacements costs alongside the initial price tag. Before you buy,  check how often replacements are needed and how much they cost.

Reading product reviews can also reveal if there are frequent issues with filter availability or delays.

4. Noise Level

Some people are ok with the noise the air purifiers produce, as it might serve as a white noise for them to sleep, while the others aren’t that agree with that.

In the market, there are a lot of quiet air purifiers with the sound ranging from 24-30 decibels.

And also, the noise level is usually listed on the air purifier’s specification chart, so you can choose what’s best for you.

5. Extra and Smart Features

Some air purifiers are equipped with smart features that allow you to turn them on and off and control them easily through your mobile phone.

This could be your next consideration if you want easy access to control your air purifiers.

Another extra feature that you might want to consider includes air quality indicators, timers and filter change indicators that some of the air purifiers are equipped with.

Choosing the right air purifiers might be a little bit tricky, but with those guides, I hope you’ll get the hang of how to choose an air purifier.

Another thing to consider is that you choose the air purifier that has already been tested for its quality and safety aspect to meet the Indonesian quality and safety standards.

This standard, also known as SNI Approval, is essential in every product that is about to be sold and distributed in the Indonesian market.
