Spark Plug Buying Guide

Spark Plug Buying Guide – We all know that spark plugs are one of the most crucial components for motorized vehicles.

Spark plugs function to burn a mixture of air and fuel in the combustion chamber which will later be converted into energy with the help of sparks.

Well, spark plugs also have several types, which using certain types of spark plugs will improve the performance of your vehicle engine.

On the other hand, if you choose to use a spark plug that is not compatible with your motorcycle or car engine, its performance will decrease.

So, instead of being confused and guessing, let’s take a look at the dimulti-style spark plug buying guide that we have prepared just for you!

Spark Plug Buying Guide: 4 Things to Consider

1. Spark Plug Types

As we mentioned earlier, there are different types of spark plug that you can choose in the market which has its own advantages.

In general, there are 3 types of materials used for spark plugs: platinum, copper, and iridium.

Check out the brief explanation, let’s go!

  • Platinum: Platinum plugs usually have a higher temperature, which can help to avoid dirt deposits on the vehicle’s spark plug. With that being said, the platinum plugs are more desirable for lower combustion engines. Also, since platinum is harder than copper, its lifespan is higher and can reach 100,000 miles.
  • Copper: Using copper with a nickel-alloy coating on its core electrode, copper plugs are the coolest-running option and best for performance applications with higher-compression. However, copper plugs also have the shortest lifespan and can only reach about 20,000 miles.
  • Iridium: Iridium and platinum plugs share identical traits to each other, which is both a hot plug. However, since iridium is harder and also more durable, it reflects its long lifespan which is about 125,000 miles. Therefore, late-model vehicles usually use iridium plugs straight from the factory because they can improve acceleration and fuel-efficiency.

2. Plug Sizes

The second is to ensure that the spark plug size, especially the thread diameter, thread length, and insulator reach, are in accordance with the engine specifications recommended by the manufacturer.

Why is it crucial? It is because if the spark plug does not have the right size, there is a high possibility that the spark plug will become loose or not installed properly.

This can lead to incomplete or inconsistent ignition, which in turn will affect the overall performance of the engine.

Moreover, the impact of incomplete ignition is not only limited to a decrease in fuel efficiency and engine power.

If this problem is left unchecked, it can cause more serious damage to engine components, such as the cylinder head, and in extreme cases, it can damage the piston and cause severe damage to the engine.

Therefore, it is important to always check and ensure that the spark plugs being used are in accordance with the right specifications so that the engine can function optimally and prevent unwanted damage.

3. Heat Range

All spark plugs usually come with a code on each surface. Well, in the code is tucked a number that shows the heat range of the spark plug.

But, what is the heat range? The heat range on a spark plug is a measurement that shows how fast the spark plug can conduct heat from the spark plug core to the cylinder head.

Well, this is an important factor in determining the performance of the spark plug and how it functions in the engine.

So, when buying a spark plug, it is advisable to choose a heat range number that matches your vehicle’s engine specifications.

The number listed on the code varies, if it shows a number below 6, then it belongs to the hot spark plug group. While above the number 6, it is included in the cold spark plug group.

If the number is large or the spark plug is too cold, it can cause carbon deposition on the spark plug.

On the other hand, if the number is small or the spark plug is too hot, it can make the spark plug overheat and cause a misfire.

Cold spark plugs have a short insulator that quickly releases heat, suitable for use on high-performance motorcycles, such as racing bikes.

While hot spark plugs are more suitable for use on daily motorcycles.

4. Inspect the Spark Plug Visually

The last spark plug buying guide is to visually inspect the spark plug you are about to buy.

To ensure that the spark plug you want to buy is in optimal condition, you can check a few key aspects.

Such as the gaskets or washers at the base of the spark plug should be difficult to remove, indicating a strong seal and secure installation.

In addition, the metal shell of the spark plug should appear shiny due to the chromium coating that serves to protect the spark plug from corrosion.

The threads of the spark plug terminal nut should also be smooth and regular, indicating that the spark plug is well installed.

The electrode tips should be clean and well-guarded, ensuring a strong and consistent spark.

The gap between the center electrode and the mass should match the manufacturer’s specifications for efficient combustion.

Also, ensure that the spark plug connections are neat and free from damage or corrosion.

So there you have it! The 4 tips of spark plug buying guide that you can use to buy the best spark plug for your vehicle.

One thing that we almost forget is to choose the quality spark plugs for your vehicle!

How do you identify high quality spark plugs for your vehicle? You can spot the SNI logo on the packaging of your spark plugs.

What is an SNI logo? The SNI logo indicates that the spark plug of your choice has already been tested and certified for its performance, quality and also safety aspects.

The SNI logo also signifies that the manufacturer is obeying the Indonesian rules and regulation.

The regulation of spark plugs is clearly stated in SNI 2929: 2008.
