Types of Sesame Oil

4 Types of Sesame Oil

1. Unrefined Sesame Oil

The first one is the unrefined sesame oil, which is made from raw sesame seeds that went through a light roasting process before being pressed.

This process not only helps to release the oil from the sesame seeds, but also brings out its distinctive flavor.

The oil has a unique flavor character, which can range from a rich nutty aroma to a subtle touch of bitterness, depending on the quality and type of sesame seeds used in its production.

Due to its unique flavor, unrefined sesame oil is perfect for use in cold dishes such as salad dressings, marinades, or as an addition to ready-made dishes.

However, it is important to remember that this oil is not suitable for high heat cooking, because  when exposed to high temperatures, these oils can lose their unique flavor thus reducing the quality and taste of the dishes you make.

Therefore, to maintain the best quality and flavor, unrefined sesame oil should be used directly on unheated dishes.

2. Refined Sesame Oil

Refined sesame oil is derived from sesame seeds that have been roasted and pressed, then put through a refining process to remove impurities.

It has a more neutral flavor, making it an ideal choice for high-temperature cooking techniques such as sautéing or deep-frying.

Additionally, refined sesame oil is more resistant to high temperatures and has a longer shelf life compared to unrefined sesame oil.

3. Toasted Sesame Oil

Toasted sesame oil is made by toasting sesame seeds until they turn a dark, rich color. This process gives the oil a deep and complex nutty flavor, making it a very popular ingredient in a lot of asian dishes.

Aside from that, the toasted sesame oil is also often used in various types of sauces, marinades, and dipping sauces as its strong nutty flavor adds a unique flavor to dishes.

Since it has a very dominant flavor, you should be careful in adding this types of sesame seed and add it as a final addition to a dish, rather than as the main oil when cooking, so that its distinctive flavor is preserved and not lost due to high heat.

4. Black Sesame Oil

Black sesame oil is made from sesame seeds that are roasted to a dark color and has a strong, earthy flavor.

While this oil is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for its health benefits, it is also very popular in cooking, especially in Asian cuisine.

Black sesame oil is often used as a finishing oil, added to dishes just before serving to provide an additional rich and deep flavor.

It is also known to provide health benefits, including improved blood circulation and skin health, so it is often chosen to enhance flavor in dishes such as soups and stir-fries.

Due to its strong flavor characteristics, this oil is best used in small amounts and at the end of the cooking process to ensure its distinctive taste remains prominent.
