Types of Industrial Boilers – Have you ever seen the steam that comes from the water heating process? If so, maybe you’ve seen one of those kinds of boilers.

Steam has been proven to be used in a variety of activities, especially production and processing processes in factories. 

Therefore, boilers as steam generators are widely used in oil production plants. So, in today’s article we will discuss the definition, function, component, principle of operation, and the types of boilers!

A boiler is a closed vessel that uses combustion to heat liquids, like water, or generate steam or vapor for external use. Boilers can be used for space heating, industrial processes, and more. 

The main function of boiler is to generate steam that then can be used in variety of industries, including but not limited to:

  • Oil Industries
  • Food and Beverage Industry
  • Sugar
  • Rubber
  • Pharmacy

4 Types of Industrial Boilers

1. Water Tube Boiler

Water tube boiler is the most common type of industrial boiler that uses water as the heating medium for the boiler itself.

They usually consist of multiple water tubes inside to transfer hot gas that is then used to heat the water and produce a steam to then be used for various uses.

The key advantages of water tube boilers are:

  • Higher pressure and temperature capabilities: The water tube boilers usually can handle higher pressures and temperatures compared to fire tube boilers. 
  • Faster startup: Due to the smaller water volume, they can reach operating temperature quickly.  
  • Efficiency: Because of the more efficient heat transfer due to the large surface area of the tubes, the water tube boiler has a better efficiency.
  • Safer: Water tube boiler is generally safer because it uses a smaller water volume thus reducing the potential damage in case of an explosion.

The water tube boilers are generally used in:

  • Power plants
  • Industrial processes
  • Marine Vessels

2. Fire Tube Boiler

The next one is also a common boiler used in industry. The fire tube boiler uses heated water to make a stream with a structure consisting mainly of water pipes, rockets, and exhaust systems.

The fire tube boiler works by burning the fuel in the furnace and generating hot gasses, then these hot gasses are directed through tubes that run through the water-filled boiler shell.

The heat from the gasses is then transferred to the water surrounding the tubes, heating the water and eventually producing steam.

Because of its simple design, the fire tube boilers are tough and efficient to be used for many different things.

They can also run on many fuel types like natural gas, diesel or biomass and generally have low maintenance cost.

The fire tube boilers are generally used in:

  • Factories
  • Schools
  • Hospitals

3. Electric Steam Boiler

An electric steam boiler is a type of boiler that uses electricity to generate steam. Instead of burning fuel to heat water, it employs electric resistance heating elements to convert electrical energy into heat.   

It uses an electric current that passes through the heating elements within the boiler, and as the resistance generates heat, the heat than transferred to the surrounding water causing it to boil and produce steam.

Here are the key advantages of using electric steam boilers:

  • Environmentally friendly: Because it uses electricity, the electric steam boiler produces zero emissions.
  • Efficient: The electric steam boilers have a high energy conversion rate with minimal heat loss.
  • Easy to install: This boiler is generally easier to install because it needs no fuel storage or gas systems.
  • Precise control: Accurate temperature controls.
  • Low maintenance: Fewer moving parts meaning the electric boilers are easier to maintain.

The electric steam boilers are generally used in:

  • Food processing
  • Pharmaceutical industry
  • Laundries   
  • Hospitals   
  • Commercial kitchens

4. Biomass Fired Boiler

A biomass fired boiler is a type of boiler that uses biomass as its primary fuel source to generate heat and steam. 

Biomass itself is an organic matter, such as wood, agricultural residues, and animal waste, that can be converted into energy.

It works by feeding the biomass into the boiler, as it undergoes a combustion process, it’ll generate heat.

The heat then transferred to the water that then turns into steam to be used for various purposes such as heating, and industrial processes

Here are the advantages of using the biomass fired boiler!

  • Environmental friendly: The biomass uses a renewable energy source thus making it more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
  • Reduce carbon footprint: Burning biomass can help offset carbon emissions compared to fossil fuels.
  • Waste management: The fuel for these boilers can use agricultural and industrial waste products.
