This is important because if the product doesn’t comply with the standard, it won’t be allowed to be used or sold in the country. Therefore, before being used, sold, or exported to certain region, we as the manufacturer need to know what standard must be fulfilled by the product, and what compliance certification needs to be obtained by the product.

Particularly for Australia, this market has unique approach of applying compliance certification for telecommunication products. Before selling or using the product, manufacturer needs to make sure that the product has complied to Australia Type Approval by signing Self-Declaration of Conformity or SDoC. This document can be a proof that the product has complied to the applied standard in Australia. Therefore, the product can be sold and used legally within the country.

Before signing the SDoC document, there’s one thing that manufacturer needs to know. One thing that becomes so important is the list of products that are mandatory to do product approval certification or SDoC process in Australia. From here, we can check whether our product is included into this list or not. If yes, then obtaining compliance certificate or type approval by signing SDoC becomes mandatory.

So, what products are mandatory to obtain Australia Type Approval? Basically, there is no complete list issued by the authority consisting of products that are mandatory to do Australia type approval certification. This is because the type of products is getting diverse day by day, and more products are developed continuously. Therefore, to determine whether or not a product is mandatory to do type approval certification in Australia, it is done by looking at telecommunication features that the product has.

If a product has telecom features such as radio frequency (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, NFC, SRD, etc), cellular (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G), or other telecom features, it will be mandatory to do Australia Type Approval certification, which is called as “ACMA certification”. And this obligation is not limited to telecommunication product only. Whether the product is telecom product, home appliance, consumer, automotive, medical, agriculture, or other types of products, as long as these have telecom features, ACMA certification will be mandatory.

Why We Care

Understanding the scope or coverage of an approval certification is very important. Especially for manufacturer, distributor, or importer, this can be the first step to identify whether their product is mandatory to obtain type approval certification or not. So, before selling or using the product, they can make sure that the required approval is not missed. Because if we missed it, it could affect to the product for being called “illegal”, making it end up being recalled from the market. By obtaining relevant compliance certificate before distributing or using the product can ensure that the product is legal and safe to be used.

Before selling a product into certain region, there’s one thing that manufacturer needs to ensure; compliance aspect of this product toward the applied standard in the target country.
