Products that are BPA free are considered the safest because they do not cause harmful effects on health.

So, what are the effects of BPA on our health? A number of studies state that BPA has a similar effect to estrogen and can bind to other hormone receptors, including the thyroid, which will interfere with the function and work of hormones.

In addition, it can also cause disruptions in various bodily functions, as well as damage to cells and tissues.

Exposure to BPA that exceeds the safe dose and continually can increase the risk of health problems and diseases, such as:

Fertility disorders to infertility

Weight gain to obesity

Heart and blood vessel disease

Type 2 diabetes

Impaired brain growth and development in children

Not only that, BPA exposure is also associated with an increased risk of endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and several types of cancer, such as colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.

The number of health problems is what makes drinking bottles or food containers labeled BPA free more recommended.

Even so, you need to know, there are several chemicals that are sometimes used as BPA substitutes, such as bisphenol-S (BPS) or bisphenol-F (BPF).

Unfortunately, there has not been much research on the effects of these two ingredients on our health, so their safety cannot be confirmed.

Also Read: “7 Types of Plastics“

How to Minimize BPA Exposure

The use of plastic is hard to avoid in our daily lives. However, you don’t need to worry. Based on research, exposure to small amounts of BPA is still considered safe for our health.

The safe limit of BPA exposure is 0.1-0.5 µg/kg/day. To minimize exposure to BPA, there are several ways you can do:

Choose products labeled BPA free for food and beverage containers or packaging.

Do not heat plastic containers, including with a microwave, because hot temperatures can break down BPA. If it breaks down and escapes from the plastic container, BPA can contaminate the food or drink inside the container.

Do not pour boiling water into plastic feeding bottles, especially when making infant or child formula. Instead, use warm water or pour cold water first before pouring hot water into the milk bottle.

If possible, replace plastic containers with glass or stainless steel containers.

Reduce consumption of food or beverages in plastic packaging or cans.

Always be careful and check the triangular recycling code at the bottom of plastic containers. Avoid buying products with the number 3 or 7 code because they usually contain BPA.

Do not use plastic containers that have been damaged, even if they are only chipped or finely cracked.

Those are some important things to know about the BPA free label on containers or packaging.

To avoid the dangers of BPA to our health, apply the ways to minimize exposure to BPA as mentioned above.

Although BPA can have adverse effects on our body, you don’t need to be too scared or panic if you occasionally drink or eat from plastic containers or cans.

Remember, exposure to BPA in small amounts and only occasionally does not make you experience health problems or chronic diseases.

However, reducing the use of plastic and choosing plastic containers labeled BPA free is still important to maintain the health of you and your family in the long run.

If you are experiencing health complaints that may point to the effects of BPA, see a doctor so that the cause can be confirmed and treated.

What is BPA free?
