Or in Persia in the Middle Ages that mixed water tanks and wind towers.

Meanwhile, modern air coolers were discovered in the early 20th century.

On 2 January 1906, a patent for an air-cooling or air-conditioning (AC) device was granted to Willis Haviland Carrier. The U.S. engineer discovered the machine accidentally.

Four years earlier, in 1902, Carrier graduated from Cornell University. He works at the Buffalo Forge room heating company for $10 a week (about US$260 in current value).

One day, he was given the task of finding a solution for a printing company in Brooklyn facing a strange problem: paper expanding or shrinking depending on the humidity variable on the U.S. East Coast.

In fact, the printing of that time, using four colors of ink applied one at a time, definitely required proper calibration to avoid mismatches or compressions.

The system Carrier designed at the time is still a prototype of the AC or, more precisely, the humidity control.

It works when the air is forced through a compressor filter driven by a piston, pumped over a coil cooled using a coolant.

Also Read: “How to Choose Air Conditioner for Your Home?“

The cold air is then discharged into an enclosed room using a fan — cooling the room and stabilizing the humidity.

The air coolers solve the problems of printing in Brooklyn as the humidity issue is gone. The news of the success then circulated from mouth to mouth. Other companies ordered a lot of similar tools that marked his first success.

But, his first success didn’t satisfy Carrier.

In 1915, he founded his own company called Carrier Engineering Corp.

The company supplies refrigeration systems to hotels, wholesale shops, cinemas or theaters, and eventually to the private homes. The U.S. Congress, the White House, and Madison Square Garden in New York were also on his first customer list.

Initially, air-conditioning machines are expensive, between US$10,000 and US$50,000. Only the sharp ones can put on the air conditioner or enter a cool, luxurious hotel. While most people could only enjoy it in the cinema buildings in the 1930s.

In the end, the air lost its aura of luxury. As now almost 90 percent of homes in the U.S. are equipped with air coolers.

The impact is incredible. People who live in hot-climate cities in the U.S. Sun Belt region, and other regions where warm weather is an economic explosive factor, are protected by Carrier’s findings.

Because the heat is not anymore a problem, a population shift took place and eventually altered the political balance in the US.

On the other hand, although the air conditioning promises a comfortable air inside your room, environmental observers who are concerned about global warming, are calling for restrictions on the use of air coolers.

The chlorofluorocarbons used in air cooling in recent years have been blamed for the continuously growing hole in the Earth’s ozone layer.

Closed and air-conditioned buildings, which take advantage of forced air circulation, like commercial aircraft, are also concerned about becoming places of spread of infectious diseases.

The inventor of air cooling, Willis Haviland Carrier died in 1950, at the age of 73. However, his company still exists and still produces air coolers and refrigerators.

Also Read: “How to Clean an Outdoor AC Unit!“

There you go!
