Types of Car Jacks

Mainly, there are two kinds of jacks, mechanical and hydraulic.

In addition to that, there is a more complicated one called the hydraulic car jacks that uses a liquid to transfer the energy needed to lift your car.

1. Scissor Jacks

Generally, these jacks are equipped with two sticks that are connected in the middle and can be expanded or folded to lift a vehicle.

Although reliable for general use, cutting jacks typically have limited lifting capacity compared to hydraulic or bottle jacks.

2. Floor Jacks

The floor jack works on the principle of using a hydraulic system, where users use a hook to move the mechanism and lift the vehicle.

It is commonly used to lift vehicle parts such as wheels or chassis during maintenance, tire replacement, or repairs in the workshop.

Easy to use and generally more affordable, the floor jack is also lightweight and portable, making it easy to store in the vehicle cargo space and use in emergency situations on the road.

3. Trolley Jacks

Even though it looks similar to the floor jack, the troller jacks have one distinctive feature that differs it from the floor jack, which is a wider range of clearance.

This makes them capable of not only being used on regular cars, trucks and SUVs but also for cars that usually have a low ride height such as sports and luxury cars.

Aside from that, the trolley jacks also usually have a more robust and heavier structure with also higher price tags

4. High-Lift Jacks

The high-lift jack is a mechanical type of jack that has a structure that resembles a railroad.

Due to this unique design, the high-rise jack is often the primary choice in busy workshops, especially for lifting off-road cars or specialized vehicles that often operate in extreme road conditions. 

In addition, the high-lift jacks are also capable of lifting trucks, making it a very versatile tool in various vehicle repair and maintenance situations.

5. Jack Stands

In addition to the jacks, there is one device that is used in conjunction with the jack itself, which is a jack stand.

Jack stand is a stand whose height may be adjusted and which is used to support an automobile that has been raised by a jack.

There are also two types of jack stands:

  • Pin Jack Stands: A simple jack stand that can be adjusted by removing a pin and adjusting the stand’s height manually.
  • Ratchet Jack Stands: Unlike pin jack stands, ratchet jack stands automatically lock into place using a built-in ratcheting device. Simply adjust it to your desired height and it’ll lock securely.
